Hardware key

Bitkey’s hardware key is generated and stored completely offline in a secure enclave. Only your fingerprint can enable the key, so it’s useless to anyone else.

App key

Bitkey’s app key is stored, as the name implies, in the Bitkey mobile app. A backup copy is encrypted and saved to your personal cloud account for recovery.Since the backup is encrypted in your cloud account, Bitkey can never access it and it’s useless to an attacker without your cloud credentials and unlocked hardware. 

Server key

A third key is stored on secure servers to help with recovery if you ever lose your Bitkey. Server keys run in an AWS Nitro Enclave. Any code changes require multi-engineer approval with hardware-token authentication.

How does a Bitcoin wallet work without a seed phrase?

This wallet does not use a seed phrase.Instead, it uses a 2-of-3 multisig system with three separate keys.

One key is stored on your hardware device.One key is stored on your phone.One key is reserved for recovery.

Any two of these keys are required to approve a transaction.There is no single secret that controls your Bitcoin.

This removes the risk of losing or exposing a seed phrase.

What happens if I lose my hardware wallet or phone?

You do not lose your Bitcoin.This wallet uses a 2-of-3 multisig system, so access does not depend on a single device.

If you lose one key, you can recover your wallet using the other two.For example, if you lose your hardware wallet, you can recover access using your phone and recovery key.

A lost device can be replaced without affecting your Bitcoin.Your Bitcoin is protected by the system, not by any single device.
